I love a good memoir and I love a good outdoor adventure book – especially one where I can learn about different cultures. I loved the stories he recounted of trekking for months through the Borneo jungle in the 1980s and I marveled at how willing he was to change his lifestyle and persist in the face of huge physical challenges. After reading this book, I reflected on how a traveler becomes apart of a community and culture. Certainly, you must listen more than you speak, observe, let go of the judgement you have (which is only true from your perspective and culture). As well, the author shared his experience learning from the Penan people to live from the land for everything he needs, and to maintain respect for that same jungle land that could swallow you up unforgivingly. Lastly, when the author finished his journey after seven months, he eventually returned back to the city and how out of place he felt and a longing for the people and lifestyle he was just recently so intertwined with.
